EDITORIAL BOARD PROFILE
A picture of Shahira Fahmy
Shahira Fahmy is an associate professor in the Department of Journalism and the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona.

Before the age of 21 she earned a Presidential press card to cover major conferences in the Middle East. After five years of working in the news and broadcast industries in Egypt and Italy, she moved on to the Missouri School of Journalism for doctoral studies where she earned her Ph.D. in 2003. Having traveled to over 20 countries and being fluent in 4 different languages, allowed Fahmy access to conduct surveys with embedded reporters worldwide and to conduct surveys of audiences of Al-Jazeera in 67 countries. Her research interests primarily focus on visual communication with an international perspective as well as new media, gate-keeping, agenda building and media performance during wartime. She has published more than a dozen articles in top refereed journals. Her work has appeared in journals such as Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Mass Communication and Society, International Communication Gazette, Visual Communication Quarterly and Newspaper Research Journal. Fahmy is currently the professional freedom and responsibility co-chair officer for the Mass Communication and Society Division at AEJMC. She is a manuscript reviewer for five scholarly journals and is on the editorial board of Mass Communication and Society, Visual Communication Quarterly and the upcoming Sage journal, Media, War, and Conflict.
