


EDITORIAL BOARD PROFILE![]() Shiela Reaves is a Professor within the Life Sciences Communication department at the University of Wisconsin. She also considers herself a writer, photographer, and editor as she works to successfully connect visual journalism with verbal journalism. As a photographer, she made her mark as the first female photojournalist in Wisconsin to work with a daily newspaper. As a writer, she's published many pieces including a book, Pathways to Prosperity, a lay history of Wisconsin's industry, which the American History Press has recently asked to reprint. Her outreach service with the Native American Journalism Association is an extremely important part of both her personal and professional worlds. As one of the founders and coordinators of Project Phoenix, she extended her service to host a National Summer Journalism Seminar for Native American high school students where they work with a team of Native role models to enhance their journalistic skills in a cultural setting, which produces a 12-page newspaper, rising voices. She has taught and edited at these week-long seminars across the country such as the Seminole Nation (Ft. Lauderdale); the Kumeyaay Nation (San Diego); The Pacific Northwest Nations (Seattle); Ojibwe Nation (Minneapolis); The Southwest Nations (Phoenix); the Iroquois Confederacy (Buffalo) and the Oneida Nation (Green Bay, Wisconsin). Many of her team members come from national media organizations around the country such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Associated Press, and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. |
