A picture of Susan Alcoze Zavoina
Susan Alcoze Zavoina is the Chair of the Journalism Department at the University of North Texas. She also coordinates the photojournalism sequence and teaches the advanced photojournalism classes.

She is currently serving as a Poynter Research Fellow and conducting a study on photo editing in online newspapers. Recently, Zavoina received a grant from the Freedom Forum Foundation to continue a visual documentation of the effects of litter on areas of the Texas Coastline. Zavoina's other documentary projects include images from the French West Indies and Romania.

While in Romania, Zavoina photographed the delivery of medical supplies by Dr. Benjy Brooks, a UNT alumna. Zavoina also spoke to journalism classes at the University of Sibiu and the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca.

After joining the faculty in the fall on 1993, Zavoina established a student chapter of the NPPA and serves as faculty adviser. Each year the advanced photojournalism students participate in the National Press Photographers Association's Electronic Times by publishing photo essays on the web.
